At last. A decent session in a proper south-westerly.

No wind at the weekend, after a howling friday when I was stuck in uni all day, but had a free afternoon on monday so was praying it would deliver. (windy on friday, windy on monday, bugger all at the weekend. Again. How ironic).

Was checking the wind all morning between lectures and it was looking good. Martin said he was going to Avon so drove down there. When I arrived around 1.30pm it was looking a bit iffy. There was no wind on the beach but a few people were out on small sails planing further out (including Andy King...). Wasn't sure what to rig so went for the Bee and 6m, and the big fin, and hoped it would be OK.

Very nicely, you hit the wind line pretty much as soon as you launched so got planing pretty soon. All was going well at the start, was jumping and gybing well. Some small waves were breaking on the sand bar so got a couple of jumps off them, and one whopper which I sailed clean away from. Nice. Was looking out for any waves that appeared rideable when coming back in but they were all too small really, so no real joy there.

Fin was too big and my ankles were killing me from trying to hold it down so came in after a couple of runs and swapped it for the smaller one. Went out again but now the wind had picked up a bit and I was mucho oeverpowered. So came in again and cranked max downhaul onto the 6m.

Now was OK, nicely powered up. But with all this launching/landing/faffing around I was getting a tad knackered and my sailing was deriorating, dropping most of my gybes and generally not sailing all that well. Also just didn't feel comfortable. Dunno why.....maybe due to my harness which was riding up a bit on me, or my lines which were too short, or the sail which I think is a fraction too big for the board. Stayed out for about an hour until darkness started to set in. On coming in wind dropped on the inside (wind direction was slightly offshore), and since the tide was now high had a 10 minute swim back in. Reminded me a bit of Jeri.....

Overall great to get out in decent wind with friends (Martin and James), but performance left something to be desired.
